Little Felix ain’t
no dummy.

He likes to read.
One night a week
he’ll take a break
from turning tricks,
and goes down to
the Free Public Library
at Logan Square.

He goes there after school,
and stays until it closes at ten.

He’s a special fan
of Russian literature.

He lives for Dostoyevsky,
and Gorki.

One night he’s coming out
of the library,
a guy stops him,
and starts up a conversation.

“Hi son,
you like to read—
huh?”

“Yeah, what’s it to you—
and I ain’t your son.”

“I know you’re not.
I’m a poet,
would you like to
come to my place
and hear me read
some of my poems.”

“Yeah, I could do that.
It’ll cost you a c-note.
I don’t do anything for free.”

The guy takes Felix
to his place
up on Spring Garden,
sits Felix down,
and starts reading
his stuff.

Felix finds his work
boring and tiresome
as hell.

Felix lets the guy drone on
for about an hour,
and can’t take any more.

His eyes start to
drift apart from
boredom.

“Yo, mister,
I really gotta be
getting home.

How’s about
you gives me fifty bucks,
and we calls it a night.”

Felix walks on home,
and thinks to himself,
that’s about the worst trick
he’s ever pulled—
never again.

Bobby

You got it right, Bobby, Felix ain't no dummy! Being paid to listen to to someone's bad poems! Now that's a trick I wish I could learn!

Thanks Art,

Would you believe it, this actually happened to me when I was a kid.  I was coming out of the library down on Logan Square, and this guy asked me if I would come to his pad, and hear him read some of his work.

Unlike Felix, I didn't take him up on it.

Thanks for your kind words on this effort.

Smart kid there, Bobby! Even back in the day it was risky going home with a stranger, and just think of the world today!

I like this one a lot :] my new poem I just wrote due to a memory is based off of your style Bobby, I hope it doesn't seem like I'm copying you, I just thought I would give it a try :]

Art,

Things haven't changed any since the good old days.  In fact, they have improved as far as kid safty goes.  there seems to be more awareness about the danger.

I was raped when I was five years old.  That's sixty-six years ago.

No, things don't really change much at all.

Of course that's just my opinion.

Angel,

Thanks for letting me know.  I'll look for your work.

You can copy my style all you want.  Just don't copy my words.

Robert Heilien once said that Poets who read their verse in public have other nasty habits.  I am glad Flelix learned his lesson.  Always a pleasure to read about your lively charactors

Thanks dear Sharyn,

You have that right.  Like Felix, I got an offer to hear a guy read poetry outside the public library here in Philly when I was a kid.

Unlike Felix, I turned him down, I turned him down.  I thought it was way too weird.

Thanks dear Tammy,

Yes, it was a hard decision for Felix to make.  However, it was either that, or fall dead asleep, and who knows what might have happened to Felix then.  It could have even been more horrible than his usual fare.

I think the government should forget about waterboarding and use bad poetry to get information from prisoners. No...maybe that would be too cruel.

Ida,

Reading bad poetry to prisoners would never pass the Geneva Convention.  There is a law against driving people insane.
