Timing Is Everything

We walk down the broad streets
of a distant town
window shopping
for things
we neither want or need

Just having fun being together
on a cold and snowy
winter afternoon

Looking up
I catch the eye
of a passing stranger

Who else could it be but a stranger in this
town so far away from our own.

Realization and recognition,
as I see a face
not seen for years

That familiar smile
intoxicating laugh
and sparkling eyes
that could blind
like the sun

Salutations and introductions,
questions and laughter

then an uncomfortably quiet moment
a shared look…
and a soft smile

And then... goodbye again

Looking back...
over my shoulder
as I walk away again...

I wonder.....

I've had two people from my past pop up recently and I too must wonder.  Well said!  Enjoyed!

Lovely description.  It has happened to all of us-meeting the past unexpectedly. Nicely done.

It happens.  And then we suddenly realize that too much time has passed and we have nothing to say.  Fine writing.  Joyce
