in the shadows

It is that time of year
again to walk the banks
along this estuary,
this ever changing
old commercial artery,
I am always armed
but there is no malice in my heart,
this day I walk
without need to choose sides,
I am old
and came here simply to breath free
living air along this ancient waterway;

sometimes ocean ripe
rushing in at me,
steeped in Mother's living stew
planet sweat simmered
stirred and salted,
swirling sodden nameless chunks
spiced unknown debris,
pushed and pulled by tides
older than organic life;

often muddy flats
cut in winding channels,
glittered silt and littered sandbars,
cast off toys,
forgotten human rubbish,
ruined markers from games
of need to beat the neighbors,
worn out merit badges,
dregs of avarice and greed,
half buried flotsam tossed,
lost in moments to succeed
beyond bankrupt needs upstream,
gone from dream to burden
to garbage not worth keeping
in countless lives of sad awareness;

sometimes,
like today,
overflowing
full and churning,
inland blood
thick in roaring torrent,
entire trees leaping
charging broken warships
racing to the sea,
this day
in river growling dark and angry
from weeks of cleansing rain,
loud enough,
arousing flowers sleeping
on banks still cold and cramping
with Spring cycle's heavy flow.

As I walk
a fleeting shadow passes,
draws my eyes,
an image lifting
wings spread taught
hawk gently rising
riding free on thermal braids,
stalking without hurry,
morning's quest for careless quarry,
vision catalyst
it sparks my mind
to recall dreams
where memories scurry,
again my eyes,
but inward turned
to screams in shadows,
braided paths,
my history's threads,
where dreams
are naught but woven streams
of wild thought running free,
my soul alive again,
stalking ideas
out among the willing,
hunting.

I do wonder sometimes how you know these things you know--but now I stop myself--I don't think I wanna know all that you know.

This slow evaluation of the sloth of humanity is so very frightening to me:

"ruined markers from games
of need to beat the neighbors,
worn out merit badges,
dregs of avarice and greed,"

I was nodding.

Thought-provoking indeed. There is now no more "away" to throw stuff now. It all comes back to us, boomeranged, mirroring...the whole of us.

sigh

and I am having trouble just cleaning my room...

but? "my soul is alive" too. I'm a hawk-shadow watcher too though. I'll have to tell you about that sometime.

This should be published, Charly.

p.s. That *glare* is gonna look great next to Albert Einstein. *chuckle*

love you!

You gather up the years and make them beautiful.
There is an edge to your poetry that is gripping, and yet refreshing in it's starkness.

So good, icebox~

lol that glare...

humanity plays with my heart like a disloyal lover.  I keep hoping and they keep hurting.

wonderful piece, Icy.

Charly

This poem is one of your very best.

entire trees leaping
charging broken warships
racing to the sea,

icebox - your poetry always astounds with its depth and clarity.

excellent 'write!'...

"...countless lives of sad awareness"

[that about 'sums it up' for me (the eternal
  human condition)!]

serious and long-sustained applause!!

I think this poem is perfection, Mr. C.  There is a strange, unexpected tranquility that flows with it despite the sadness and debris which floats with tide.  Top shelf for this one!  *hugs*.....jo

Oh, Charly, this is a magnificent write ... it was awesome walking with you and pondering along ...

Extraordinary insights and it is true, me too, I feel as if all the debris had been washed away in the end and I can breathe more easily.

Love and hugs, dear POET.
