I am amazed at how close
The little sparrow comes to me.
Is it the spirit reincarnate
Of someone who knew me?

Ah, it’s the bird seed, and it knows
I am benevolence, flinging down manna
Through the cheerful, blue air,
And it knows it is safe, unless I wield
The lightening bolt (sudden motion)

And become the god of wrath . . .

I used the word "lest", and I don't think it is used correctly. I am trying to use a single word that would mean---as long as I do not. Any suggestions?

Ah, the cat just walked in and said, "Instead of lest, try, unless. Who can argue with a cat!

Still, if anyone thinks of a better word or words, please pass it on.

Such simple observations can produce such great little poems, sometimes.

Art, I tried this & it worked for me...

"And it knows it is safe, unless perchance I wield
The lightning bolt (sudden motion)"

Good write,  John ( BTW, no E in lightning.. )

He would not come near, if he could not trust you 100% ... animals have a sixth sense!

This is very lovely.

And then of course the cat's suggestion is the perfect one ... for the same reason!

Love,
Margherita
