Emancipation Proclamation

I dreamt last night
of coarse sallow beaches
of tropical breezes that reeked
with sweet scents of hibiscus and anthuriums
and ebony limbs entwined
around milky flesh
as we melded
into each other

always in these dreams
we lie
face to face
pretending
the late night phone call
with father’s harsh voice proclaiming
( you’re not bringing that n*gger into my home! )
never happened

I see Passions won't let me use that word in a poem. I am not prejudice in the least - this is just a sad reflection on how little we've really came since 1863.

I am nothing special...and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me,this has always been enough.~N.S

Ruth,

Take my word for it.  The "N" word is hurtful to many sensibilities.

I have a grown adopted son who is half African American.

We never allowed that word to reach his ears, and he was never allowed to use it.

He's grown into a fine businessman, with three lovely children.  They will never hear that word either.

Good for Passions.

Bobby,
I understand that word is hurtful, exactly the reason it was used in this poem to begin with. The fathers proclamation not only hurt the young man but also the daughter. Love may know no boundries but sometimes boundries are placed on our relationships by others and when that happens we have one of two choices
1. stay with the one we love regardless of family
2. stand by family and perhaps never again in our lifetime find this kind of love

...as for the woman in this poem, I left that up to the reader, a little imagination is sometimes a good thing

Hoot_owl_rn,

Well, you know what Felix always says:

“To hell with what daddy says to do,
always do what’s best for you.”
