The ides of March
bring blustery beginnings,
as Sassy squirrel snuggles away
in a tree-hole den
to await the next generation.
Meanwhile,
three recent adventurous litter-mates
scamper and scurry tree-to-tree,
run across power and telephone lines
chasing each other’s tails,
resembling mischievous kittens.
Squirrel gestation lasts about six weeks.
Newborns are naked,
fur-less and toothless,
eyes and ears closed,
then nursed by mommy for three months
before learning the fine art
of how to pester
humans and their domestic pets.

I challenge anyone bored with the rigors of life
to take up the hobby of squirrel watching.
When the ides of March bluster,
grab your binoculars and have some fun!
What have you got to lose
but the blues?

Yo Midnitesun,

This is very good work.  I too like squirrels.  I never stand for anyone describing them as rats with bushy tails.

No way.

Love this poem!

When I was a little girl, I used to draw pictures of them for I was an avid "squirrel-watcher" ~ until one fateful day.

I was about 10 years old and was walking down the elm-lined lane where my grandmother lived.
Squirrels were scampering about and I enjoyed watching their playful shenanigans ~ until one chased me and bit a chunk out of my leg! I left a trail of blood all the way to my grandmother's house. After that horrifying incident, I drew squirrels with vampire teeth!

I'm over the trauma of it now, and am back to being a squirrel-watcher, once again!

A delightful write, Kacy!

Love & Squirrel De-Light!

Linda

Yo, Bobby, thank you for that reply!
I still have guilty feelings about ending the life of one incredibly mischievous squirrel in Alaska, who kept ripping off the window screen, entering my cabin, then eating holes through bread, stealing peanuts, and harassing my Peruvian guinea pig and floppy eared rabbit! ~sigh~ not to mention s)he chewed through the phone wire. A carpenter friend 'dispatched' the "pest"; then I had nightmares for weeks over that one episode. Needless to say, as a long-time vegetarian, my guilt feelings were doubled by the knowledge that I allowed someone to take a life on my behalf, when my survival wasn't really threatened.
Sassy benefits from this desire to foster a no-kill attitude.
Yo, Linda! Happy to have another squirrel-watcher aboard! Thanks for your anecdote! Glad it didn't deter you from enjoying them.

I've never had the chance to know a squirrel intimately.  Gophers yes.  Squirrels no, but I think they would make adorable creatures to have in one's back yard. Joyce

I live in a little old railway cottage which backs onto the mainline between Liverpool & Manchester. Every morning a grey squirrel runs along the fence & eats the food we put out on the bird table...this has been happening for years, not the same guy I'm sure but Rhiannon thinks it is. When she was around 3 years old she could never pronounce the name & to this day calls them Quirrels!

fine nature (and spring-anticipation) 'write!'

I am especially fond of:

"...before learning the fine art
of how to pester
humans and their domestic pets(!)"
