Here before the church bells ring
but gone before true sight
a little one in swaddling clothes
said, “Hi” to me one night.

Too slow I could have warned her
the world “don’t” favour little girls
and I hoped with all my might
a little boy it was with curls.

The gift of life somewhere is done
the future is what thought decrees
and I’m a-thinking love, light, joy,
for all her days still yet to be.

The come and go and still souls know
there was a time of side by side
and though shrouded this in mystery
I’m still honoured by the “hi/goodbye”.

Here before the church bells ring
but new life is in full swing!

"the future is what thought decrees

~ Keep those thoughts for both of you!

Thanks, Linda.  I will keep the thoughts for my little "dream child"- it's the least I can do.

Lovely piece, Helen.  My sister always wanted a little girl....she did eventually get one -- a granddaughter.   ....jo

Thanks everyone for reading and for commenting and, Jo, to hold aloft the flame of hope is to finally receive.  It's just not for us to say when or in what form.

I guess ol Forrest Gump’s mama was right
‘Live is like a box of chocolates.
You never know what you’re gonna get.’

Great write Honeybunch.

Yep, JL, she was right!  Don't you just love that box of chocolates that makes us consider so carefully what choices we make?
