these are the days of black birds
beaks spread wide
seeking cool on asphalt

these are the days of pink Altheas
rusted dead
two to a bush

days when jasmine hides its blooms
its scent abandons the night

days when the sun flickers
and the sweet shadow of what was
is lost

these are the days that call her name
stun her breath

and she crawls under the sun porch

seeking dusty peace

Altheas and Jasmin return with the spring.
But will the sweetness ever be the same?

the dog days of August,
with the old red hound, unable to breath
on the porch,
finding a cooler space
in the porch cooled dirt beneath...

Wonderful!

Lady Kate, even up here north of the 49th we had a sweltering Augustian dog day aujourd'hui!

You described yours so poetically!

Sending an ice-cold 'angelade' your way!
