I Thought Of You

I thought of you as the stairwell turned hard left
and the stumble of my shoe wore into the flooring
of a place where so many lived, died....returned
to find nothing but despair waiting.

Even the air whispered your name to me, the smell
of “Red” cleansing the air, bringing the heart of
one’s soul to a slight boil as the pan shimmered
and my naked palms sweated profusely.

And soon, it would all be but the sound of a latch
thundering down the hall into the janitor’s closet,
a place where moths and once filled yellow
buckets stood quietly against the wall, long, long
before I saw you, before I knew your name...
Before a river ran wild between us and a single
strand of your hair teased and tortured me
into submission.
