An Old Soldier's Prayer

Oh God, make this old man young again. . .
Strengthen these legs and arms. . .
Make my hands strong and my fingers ready for war. . .
Place wisdom in my mind and your angels at my side. . .

Guide me to that field for battle, as a witness to those against you:
This act of hate so evil and so brutal.

Place your hook into that enemy’s nostrils; pull them onto that killing field…
Confuse their minds to see not, and ears to heed not their own destruction…

Send them to their master, the liar, the murderer, and the robber of life everlasting…

~~
Oh Father, forgive us all:
This want for war.

Unfortunately, atrocities such as 9/11, can can boil the blood and give rise to vengeful thoughts!

However, your closing lines, brings us back to our God centre.

Love, Harmony, & Peace,

EA: I love mankind because God loves all with grace and forgiveness.
But I am just a man, and what was perpetrated on innocence on 9/11/2001
was pure evil and revulsion, a kind of hate that only God can forgive.

Dull Glitter: Thank you for reading.

Our war was a mess, but freedom is worth fighting for. I still mourn our losses, but like you would once again be willing to bear the Infantry rifle. Well said.

As long as our god is on our side how can we loose?

I am not sure what an old soldier is though since retirement in the main starts at 40 for the UK NCO and 55 for Officers (and gentlemen) or long service NCOs.

I am probably biased because even though I am over both retirement ages I still consider myself middle aged... err if not young....

I will hazard a guess and say an old soldier must be around thirty years old... though with Afghanistan and Iraq I would imagine there will be far more weary ones....

When you are serving (maybe some ex military can confirm this) an Old Soldier is sort of derogatory term........?

Fairplay:  Thanks for reading and your reply.
Not offensive or critical.  Pertains to me and how I felt when I watched the twin towers fall, and I thought about all the people on the airliners, and all the family members, and the police and firefighters.  My reflex.  I was even too old for Desert Storm, but I wanted to go.  And too old for what is going on now, but I wanted to go.  Sorry if I offended you.  The “Old” was a depiction of me.

Such genuine and sponteneous heart JL.  The will to be a soldier is the most honorable and brave of all paths.

I had more than a little emotion reading this, and it took me long to be able to respond.

Well done.

It is a reaction that many can relate to, I think none of us is able to eliminate totally a feeling of hatred ...
But when we are over the ferocious rage, to change the world we really need to put down the weapons.
I join you in praying for forgiveness of this want of war, which is part of our nature, but we must overcome it, peace can't be forced. It bases on justice and love, not on vengeance.
This is well done, because it does reflect human nature.
Love,
Margherita
