Daily Ritual
By Paul Wilson

Daily ritual stick of skin
I can’t stop this need
Asking the question…why me?
Begging stop... I can’t... I concede

Everyday a monkey on my back
That leaves it’s mark on me
I can’t stop this fix of need
Choices…out of the question you see

I pray the highs and lows would stop
Neither wants to be the first
Someday’s I just want to die
Unsure what would be worse

Let the devil take my sorrow
I beg and plead for relief
New supply coming tomorrow

The stick of skin everyday
Leaves it’s mark of red
A ritual I endure
My need must be fed

Inject last drop from needle
Into a different place today
I have to get my daily fix
Then I know I’ll be okay

I pray the lord my soul to keep
If I should never wake
Tomorrow is another day
Another choice I must make

Don't assume you know me
The clue to this riddle is there
In the lines of eight and seven
Judge me not all beware

~~To share my poems with you is to share my heart with you~~

I have a very dear friend who is diabetic...actually, I have several friends.  Some are stage 2, others stage 1.

One of them celebrated 50 years of living as a diabetic just a few short months ago.  She knows the monkey.

If I'm off target here, so be it.  But their choice is to live... and live well.

I love anything you write, be it a riddle that I'm not sure of or otherwise

Karliea...I guess I should have left the last verse about the clue off, so people could draw their own conclusion. I wanted to see if people would take it the wrong way as being about a drug user.

You are right dear lady. So far all I have to do is take 2 pills a day but many have to take the shot, so I guess I am lucky...Paul

While reading, didn't for one moment take it like you were a drug user.

My son's father is a cronic diabetic, now with diabetic lukemia...he goes into insulin shock a lot, but once he and his wife were on the road.  She told me they stopped to get him some oj, and the waitresses thought he was drunk.

He is an amazing man....we hope he will be with us for quit some time.

Love to you and yours and thank you for writing and sharing.

Hugs

Paul, my friend, what a great write.
This tells a tale of many, I am sure.
I can only imagine the daily pain and discomfort.
Brilliantly descriptive.

Paul, since I know that you are diabetic, I understood where you were coming with this write.

Take good care of your health, m'friend,  and hopefully you won't have to 'graduate' from the pills to the needles!

A fine write!

Linda

JL...Thank you dear friend. Glad you enjoyed.
This just came to me last night while I was testing my blood sugar. It really does get to be a pain in the butt.
I know I am better off than some and I must try to remember that and it will keep me strong...Paul

Linda...Dear lady I guess there's no fooling you and all the other caring people here at PIP. Thanks for understanding and for all of your thoughtful words...Paul

The Lady...I know you understand. As routine as it is for you I know that you would rather not have to do it.
My younger brother takes 2 shots a day plus the pills.
Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it...Paul

Paul...If it had been someone else writing this, I might have taken the meaning in a different way.  Take care of you...ok!

Dear Paul, not for a moment did I conclude that you are one of the evil needle, I doubt that anyone who is, could write with such passion and clarity. I wish you well.

Paul, Just from your previous writings, I knew it had to be other than what the  closed mind jumps to.  I understand. A very dear friend of only 68 years of age, has lived with this forever it seems. She is now blind. She also has to use a nightly dialysis machine to prevent her having to go the hospital to have the exchange done. She is a most unfortunate lady but has managed to keep her sense of humor. Still living alone with the help of her better friends to help her. sincerely, martyjo
