Living in hell
Battered and bruised
Who speaks for the children
Frightfully abused!
Parents who beat them
For trivial things
Living in fear
Of what the next
Punishment brings!
Surrounded by alcohol
Drugs, poverty and strife
They don't stand a chance
In this wretched life!
Sent to some Foster Homes
Where the motive is greed
They are merely tolerated
That's not what they need!

Where are the gatekeepers
The watchdogs of hell
Appointed to monitor them
Wherever they dwell?
Overwhelmed by the numbers
They finally lose track
Of some of these victims
And never look back!
The headline reads
"Children found dead!"
They could have stopped it somehow
Can you tell me...someone
I'd like to know
Who'll speak for those children NOW!

Not in the UK Bea, it costs a fortune to be a foster parent here.  The allowances do not cover half of the costs involved.

However,  your poetry shows how strong anybody growing up in todays society has to be to actually make sense of the heritage  our generation has left them....

I have asked myself the same questions....truly a tough subject to even get people to listen to, let alone talk about, thank you for this....

I found this quite disturbing, as I'm sure most did (not in a critical way of you!), but boundaries have to be pushed in poetry. Nicely written, and scary too. I thank the heavens my parents weren't weird or inclined toward weirdness.

Knowing the dedication both you and Joan have re your charges, I would only hope that other children would be so lucky!

Unfortunetly, too many here in the New York area, are not so fortunate...and the headlines tell the tragic stories.

You are one of the fortunate ones Luke, to have loving and responsible parents.  Would that ALL children were so lucky!

It can be a problem...children do not pick their parents...and unfortunately some have drug additions, alcohol problems, and control and anger issues...and these seem t be the ones most likely to have children...James

Hi James...It's so tragic that the people who desperately want chldren, and would be absolutely wonderful parents are denied that priviledge, while some parents treat them as less than human beings and an inconvience breed like rabbits!

Go figure!
