Delicate and crinkled
like thousand year old silk
stored crushed in a drawer
all these centuries past,
her hands work quickly
making ready for the day
while remembering what seems
was only yesterday she inhaled
the same scents drifting
into her morning...

She picks up the twelve stalks
of deep purple hyacinth blooms
tying them together with
pale pink baby rosebuds and
tiny white lilies of the valley
wreathed throughout with
greenery that tumbles
down to her lap and beyond
to whisper across her feet

Next comes elegant lace
carefully chosen from the
waist of her own wedding dress
it is woven between the blooms
a memory with its own cause
to celebrate fifty-two times
and bring the same wish
for the young one today
who will carry this bouquet
to her waiting lover at
the end of a rainbow

Her something old
is now something new
made of dreams
and from the flowers
her own grandmother grew
while telling stories of life
to the little one by her side
before her hands became
delicate and crinkled
like thousand year old silk
stored crushed in a drawer
all these centuries past

This poem is like a house of mirrors....image within image within image....beautifully conceived and excellently done.

Life is what we make of it, yes, and life is also what it makes of us.

You paint as well with words, as Rockwell did with paint!!!

Your word strokes are pure silk! Totally enjoyed ~ and envisioned.

what a glorious word painting...your last stanza was a wonderful gem...

"Her something old
is now something new
made of dreams
and from the flowers
her own grandmother grew
while telling stories of life
to the little one by her side
before her hands became
delicate and crinkled
like thousand year old silk
stored crushed in a drawer
all these centuries past"

very nicely done...

awww thanks, all!   I had no idea this would be so well received.

I don't write often anymore, but the inspiration of a new member, lemonraindrops (in the teen forum), has helped me grab that longing to write again and drag the ink out of my pen.

She is my niece, very talented, and I am so proud of her I could burst like a balloon. I hope that this is the beginning of more for 2007, and that my mind doesn't continue to shut down on me again!

Thank you all for your responses. It means so much...more than you can know.
