As I look out over the crystalline waters
My eyes begin to glitter
The pure joy that comes over me
Soon envelopes my soul

I cast my line
Waiting for that little tick
That lets me know
Soon I will have a fight

Who will win
I surely do not know
My heart races
The reel begins to smoke

Whoah this must be a big one
Out of the deep it rises
Ascending into the air
Careening downward with a great splash

Now my hands begin to quiver
The lunker of my dreams
I begin to bring it in
But this is no ordinary fish

Soon my arms begin to wear
It is struggling so hard
Then I hear the snap
My head drops in disgust

I guess that's why they call it fishing

I used to go fishing. All I caught was an ugly sucker fish that was slimy. I was hoping for a bass. Your poem fits all fishers well. Thank you for sharing.

I haven't gone fishing in years ~ and I MISS it!!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading your poem! It vividly brought back fond memories of the anticipation, the thrill ~ and the occational disappointment that I also experienced! That "snap" was so disheartening!

You set the scene very well! Great imagery!

Giving you a warm, welcoming hug,
EA

Even the smallest fish
can give a big fight.

Now I'm ready for the snow
to subside,
and treat myself to fish

and mosquitos.

Nameless........I think I hooked that same fish once upon a time.  Fishing for me has always been about the imagery, anyway.

Remembering the time I caught two fish at once, on the same lure....

A bass plug with trebles fore and aft...and it seems they'd raced each other for it, two bass.  I've never understood why I had to let them both go, but my father was adamant about it....and as I recall, they were the only fish I caught that day.
