Now you have to understand,
Sally and Felix are a little more
than a little rough around the edges.

They can be brutal as hell.

Foster care didn’t leave them
with real nice dispositions.

They’re still young,
and haven’t had a chance
to forget it all.

You better believe they hate you.

They let you know that,
as soon as they
open their mouths.

Oh yeah,
they look sweet and innocent enough,
with their clear acne free faces.

Look close though
at Felix’s knuckles.

He has “HATE” scratched
on both fists.

That’s not too traditional is it?

You’re supposed to have
“LOVE”
scratched on at least one
set of fingers.

Not to be outdone,
Sally has “SCREW YOU”
scratched across her bare,
exposed,
shoulder blades.

She has a disturbingly rude habit,
of turning her torso,
and flashing it in your face.

They get on the El at Girard Station,
sprawl themselves on the floor,
and start yelling
back and forth to each other.

“Hey Felix,
is this just about the
dumbest looking bunch of creeps
you ever laid eyes on
or what?

Talk about ugly too,
oh yeah, uh huh”

“Yeah Sally,
they’re real losers.
You can bet
they never seen nothing
like us before.”

“That’s because
they’re all from nice families.
Just look at them,
sitting there all clean and pretty.

We’re from a bad neighborhood folks,
that’s what turns us so mean and bitter.”

“Sally,
fold your legs in,
people are staring at them.

You don’t want to give people
the wrong idea or nothing.

Hey guy,
see something you like?”

About this time,
the train pulls into
Fairmont Station.

(Fairmont Station’s
not there any more.
So you’ll have to wait
for Spring Garden
to make your escape.)

Bunches of people get off.

They have decided
they really don’t need
to get downtown
that fast after all.

They’d rather take their time,
and relax standing
on the platform.
It’s loads of fun
waiting for the next train.

Sally and Felix
laugh their heads off.

Bobby

Hey Bob

Yanno, I love reading you for many reasons...first and formost the story content, second, knowing both Philly and NYC, brings it up close and personal, yanno, and third, because your an exceptional writer, 4th, because deep down, I believe your writing from extensive experience or research?  and I ain't just a whislin Dixie...

and thanks so much for Muck Charles in Hell’s Kitchen

Loved this just as much....don't believe it would be easy to shake experiences as a foster kid...some good, some not so good.

somehow, I know, that you and your wife would be exceptional and interesting conversationalists...

LeeJ,

Thanks for the kind words on this poem.  Sally and Felix never did marry, they do however, remain very good, and close
friends, even after fifty some years.

Drauntz,

Thanks for the kind words.  I'm pleased it got to you.

We did get a lot of joy out of those El rides.
