Devil's Advocate

I've never been nice, it's just not my way,
for being agreeable seldom can pay.
I play devil's advocate, not just to have fun,
but to find other ways that  things may be done.

When faced with a challenge folks try to explain
the reason why this is how they play the game.
I find I learn more in a good argument
than by getting advice that is gentler sent.

When I publish poems with contentious themes
the comments come flooding back in their reams,
but it isn't the folk who all like what I say
that give me the answers I seek every day.

I may disagree with the people who shout,
or even retort with an essence of doubt,
but the truth of the matter is not what it seems,
I learn more from conflict than praise of my themes.

So never back down when you're facing a fight,
for even if you are determined you're right,
you're bound to learn something, or even much more,
and in losing a battle,  you just may win a war!

Thank each and every one of you for reading my offerings and the very welcome comments.

As I have intimated in this piece you may find on the very odd occasion(?) you may either disagree with what I write or find my poetry not up to the standards of some of that which I have read on this site.

Please feel free to tell me, I'll only sulk and disagree..... but my work benefits from it and it's free advice!

Have Fun (even at my expense)

Ivor

Bea, whats wrong with this, why haven't you commented. (Hang over from your Birthday?)

RDB,

Thank you for commenting on a few of my poems now.  For the first time I have the liberty of selecting from my archives poetry that will build up a picture of the writer, as opposed to just posting new poetry that follows my development and moods.

Untill I get to know people better here it is very hard to offer critique or as I have been well known to, offer response in rhyme.

It looks like you have been around this site a considerable time so any gentle persuasion for me to move in the right direction would be appreciate (this equally applies to all the other excellent poets who have reviewed my work - you know who you are).

Fun, comic, stories, nostalga, spiritual, religious... and of course cofrontational!

Your wish is my command....

Ivor
