Anguish
A Senryu String

Life must precede death,
but only by a small bit.
This knowledge drives grief.

Howl at the night sky!
The pain leaps into the void,
assailing the stars.

Stars feel pain, keenly;
They are silent, but observe
the anguish of loss.

The now-saddened stars
bleed light and plunge to Earth
from sheer empathy.

Stars wink out of sight.
Too much pain has brought them down.
The darkness deepens.

The starless sky mourns
its children's self-sacrifice
as fallen heroes.

The featureless void,
lifeless, now grows colder...but,
all the pain subsides.

And just as soon, stars,
their sacrifice not in vain,
glow bright where they lay.

Phoenix-like, they rise,
gaining in intensity
as they fill the sky.

The cycle complete,
the stars that eased the anguish,
once again shine bright.

As the pain recedes,
the beauty of night returns.
The stars twinkle hope.

Life must precede death,
but death must precede life, too.
Rise, become a star.

Hi, jak.

Yes, it did grow a little longer than I had intended.  Thanks for the nice comment, though.

Thanks, Marge.

I worked long and hard on this string.  Maybe a little too long and too hard, but then, here it is!
