Moved from a shack to a barn

We know you haven’t heard much from us
Except for an odd rumor or two
Leaked down through the years

Perhaps we should have written sooner
But even those of us that knew how
Were never very inclined to waste ink

We were busy immigrating
Settling into lives catching Codfish
Marrying, and having babies

More than a few of us passed time
Making and drinking “Screech”
To alleviate the cold and the hardship

Many died as they had lived
Accepting their end without complaint
In the grey anonymity of the sea

There was an immediacy to our lives
That superceded keeping journals
Or left room for ennui to creep in

Some of us migrated yet again
Worked in shipyards, ran numbers
Hustled pool and went to school

Never thinking, one day a descendant
Might sit drinking by his woodstove
Writing letters to himself

From long dead relatives

This piece got my attention.  I admire the way you weaved such an interesting tale in this offering.  And the ending surprised me, and I do adore surprises.

Excellent read ... enjoyed.

The urge to know
those we thought
we never would,
and still, in candlelight,
the mirror knows us
very well.

Ed...it is good to read you again!  It's good to know your roots, if only to be able to write like this.

wranx,

It is good to read your poetry once again.  Yes, our ancesters have lived such different times, yet, there is that common thread we share.  Your poetry always leaves me in great thought.  Thank you.
