(I just saw "Bridge Of Terabithia", and it made me cry my heart out with the abrupt, tragic ending, which especially made me upset in that the film is being advertised merely as an innocent, fanciful, "Lord of the Rings" type of family adventure.

So don't be fooled by this poem's title, as this reflects deeply on serious issues too many sensitive, imaginative children in the world face, including the psychological effects of bullying, parental neglect and lack of emotional support and what can happen when a sensitive child lacks that gentle guiding hand.

This poem begs most of all for every parent to love their children unconditionally and allow them the space to be themselves and appreciate their true nature while also guiding them and helping them extend their roots and spread their wings.

So if you take your family to see "Bridge Of Terabithia", please be careful if you have sensitive children because the ending can be devastating to them. )

Dana O'Shee & The Crystal Dragon

.
.
.
…Renee Silverton, what a daydreamer,
in heart named Dana O’Shee,
spreading fantasy around in colorful streamers…
.
.
…living her life in her imaginary world,
with Kawena Kamaria and the Synesthesians,
and ladybug cherubs glistening in mother in pearl…
.
.
…she’s just a sensitive, reclusive girl,
mooning around,
who wants nothing to do,
with the politics of the playground…
.
.
…her deadbeat dad’s neglectful,
so coarse and authoritative,
while her mother wants to listen,
but falls into wild mood swings,
is so thin-skinned…
.
.
…bullies at school often push her around,
when at heart I see a troubled spirit,
behind every bully’s eyes beyond any doubt…
.
.
…so Renee spends hours every afternoon,
at The Crystal Dragon down the street,
immersing herself in every new phase of the moon…
.
.
…SHE WONDERS IF ALL MAGIC,
HAS BECOME SOCIALLY WITHDRAWN,
WELL, “A LIGHT, SENSITIVE TOUCH,
IS STILL WORTH A TON OF BRAWN…“
.
.
…WHY DOESN’T IT EVER FEEL SO OBSCENE,
TO ASSUME PEOPLE ARE MORE SUBTLE,
AND LESS SENSITIVE THAN THEY SEEM…
.
.
.
.
.
…she says her best friend is Ghillie Dru,
weaving his clothes from moss and leaves,
and regularly caregiving for the druids…
.
.
…she swore she could fly like a Hyter sprite,
because the Lunantishee convinced her,
those who taste colors are given to soar like a kite…
.
.
…then one night her parents were having a fight,
the howling noise pollution,
making her wince in complete fright…
.
.
…determined to fly away from here,
she ran as fast as her legs could carry her,
out the screen door and into the clear…
.
.
…SHE CLIMBED TO THE TOP,
OF AN OAK TREE IN THE PARK,
TESTING THE GOSSAMER OF HER SUPPOSED WINGS,
WAVING HER ARMS IN AN ARC…
.
.
…AND SHE LEAPT FROM THE TALLEST BRANCH,
LIKE AN ACROBAT,
HITTING THE GROUND WITH A THUD,
BREAKING HER LEGS, RUPTURING HER BACK…
.
.
.
.
.
…Renee’s never been spotted,
at the Crystal Dragon anymore,
passing it by on her wheelchair,
holding grudges with every wooden rocking horse…
.
.
…it feels she has grown up all way too fast,
in retrospect perceiving her imagination,
as a dead hand of the past…
.
.
…she still holds all these gifts,
of synesthesia,
yet sits by herself in the school cafeteria,
mute with anesthesia…
.
.
…her heart’s always crying out for emotional support,
she wants to believe somewhere in the balance,
even the most timid lamb isn’t trapped to life’s inferior court…
.
.
…AND WHAT BREAKS MY HEART,
MOST OF ALL,
IS I CAN SEE RENEE’S VULNERABLE SMILE,
IN THE EYES OF ALL THE SMALL…
.
.
…AND THEY SAY ALL LOVE GIVEN,
IS ALL LOVE THAT’S SAVED,
WILL MANKIND PRAY THAT SHE’LL DREAM AGAIN,
IN THE MOON’S NEXT PHASE…
.
.
.
.
.
…why doesn’t it ever feel so obscene,
to assume people are more subtle,
and less sensitive than they seem…
.
.
.

Thanks for the movie warning, and I found your explanation of what motivated you to write this piece very endearing, you will one day be an excellent parent.

always seeking joy, adventure and romance and wishing you find the same

oh Noah, you have just dismantled my heart
I didn't know...had no idea the movie was that heartbreaking, but look, look at this poem which takes presedence over the issue
which every human being should read...vividly speaks of where your heart commits...
well done...
