Black Bears in the Berries

We took our berry buckets
And we headed out of town.
The weather was delightful,
So we rolled the windows down
And it was so relaxing.
We had nothing on our mind
But the sweet anticipation
Of the berries we would find.
The berry patch lay scattered
All along a brushy hill,
So all of us got busy.
Soon our pails began to fill.
I heard my young son talking
To somebody out of sight.
I moved so I could see them,
Then I froze in shock and fright!
Two bears as black as midnight
About thirty feet apart,
Were gorging on ripe berries
And struck terror to my heart.
I moved my son back slowly,
Until bushes made a screen
And then we beat the quickest
Retreat you’ve ever seen.
When we reached our car I cried,
In voice so loud and clear:
“There’s black bears in the berries
And I’m getting out of here!”

Oh did this really happen?  Oh, I would be frightened.  Thank goodness you saw them first.  Tell Ron thank you for his lovely card.  I was so busy right then, I didn't get one off.  I'll have to send a very especially lovely one for Thanksgiving.  Love, Joyce

Denise:

This was one of the little adventures my son and I had when he was young. He was three years old at the time of the berry eating bears.

Thanks,
Betty Lou

Hi Joyce:

Ys, this really happened on Larch Mountain our of Portland, Oregon, when Bogie was three. He and I always seemed to end up in some precarious situation!

I'll tell Ron you enjoyed your Halloween card. Thanks for reading and hope your Thanksgiving is great!

Love
Betty Lou

Oh, how I enjoyed this story. I could picture you  taking his hand quietly and  quickly scooting  back to safty. Wondered if he really remembers it or  does he remember  just the story? best to you  latearrival/jo

late arrival:  My son says he remembers this
but he was only about three years old, so I am not sure. The story has rambled around the family all his life and that may be the source of his rembering, as you suggest. It was a scary moment for me, but ended well!

Oh my goodness, that was great! Glad everyone came out safe, I remember berry picking with my Mother and that was her greatest fear.

Hi Lisa:  I was pretty scared myself when I saw who my little son was talking too. Fortunately, the bears were so busy eating berries they hardly looked in our direction!
