Old Bone and his Griselda
walk down to Penn Treaty Park.

It’s late at night,
on the Fourth of July.

It’s hot.

They remember old times there.
They know what can happen there.

They know there can be
blood in the water there.

Because it’s so hot,
kids are still diving in the river
to cool off.

A big yacht motors in from up river,
throws anchor beside the pier.

Bone and Griselda know
what’s going down.

A cop suddenly appears
upon the pier.
No one knows
where he came from.

The cop leans over the rail
at the end of the pier.

The cop hollers over
to the guys on the yacht:

“Hey you,
what are you doing
down here?”

“Oh, we're just cruising around, officer,
and wanted to see what was down this way.”

“Oh yeah, well,
you found out didn’t you.

Just keep cruising on out of here.”

Bones and Griselda
laugh their sad laugh.

They’re glad to see the yacht
take off.

They know no poor kid
will go missing tonight.

There will be no
blood in the water tonight.

Authors Note:

Penn Treaty Park Pier was taken out several years ago by a runaway coal barge.  That was a good thing.

Bobby

It was a place of horrors then! For once the cop was there at the right moment.

Well done, dear Bobby.

Love,

Thanks dear Margherita,

For commenting on my poem.

Yes, it could be a place of horrors.

However, it was also a fun place to swim, and you could make money there.

Friendly tourists threw quarters in the water, and you could dive for the quarters.  It was an attraction during hot summers.

It's sad that the neighborhood still loses children to the river in hot weather.  Almost always by drowning.  It happens every year.

It's a Catholic neighborhood, so there are a lot of kids.  We raised four ourselves.

Love Bobby

Yes, that's a good thing the cop showed up.
Damn kid killers should get a taste of their own medicine.

Good one Bobby like the history.

Thanks dear Juju,

Yes, this one is sad.  It's sad kids can't just cool off in the water without someone trying to grab them.

It's sad too that some of my friends used to go there to make some money selling themselves.

I never had to do that.

Thanks Eric,

I'm pleased it worked that way for you.

You are correct about people that go there to mess with our kids.  It was good to see the cop that night.  It's sad that things like that happened, and still happen, only no longer at Penn treaty Park.

Bobby
