Fer as tall tales go, this'un ain't thet far-fetched,
as a lad people oft' kinda looked at me strange,
and was heard many times that "thet boy's a bit tetched"
at the school, or at church, or at our local grange.

An' it weren't 'bout my looks nor the cut o' my jaw
nor the way thet I laughed nor the look in my eye.
What it was put them off wasn't nothin' they saw,
ain't sure how t'explain but I'll give 'er a try.

Well ya see them thar folks it appears they had heard
I'd acquired a bit of a literary bent
which is all well 'n good fer like spreadin' Gods word,
which is 'bout just as far as their reasonin' went.

Now I ain't one t' judge nor throw stones 'n the like,
but it seems I was "tetched" fer as they was concerned,
and the truth of it hit me as lightning will strike
thet they thought I was "tetched" cuz a somthin' I'd learned.

What thet was 'n I swear it's the Gods honest truth,
set them lookin' at me like was nobody home,
kinda rankles me more now I's long in the tooth,
they done thought I was "tetched" cuz I likes t' write poems!

Thet's my tale, yessiree, as I've said, ain't far-fetched,
tell someone your a poet, they gon' think you is "tetched".

Now isn't that just the truth!  Amazing the stigma that follows us folks for sure.

Cute, and great timing for this site's anniversary.

People often give me the same look... I don't exactly appear the type that enjoys the pen and paper.

Great read, I liked the dialect, well done.

I think we all are a bit 'tetched' at least that makes us unique enough to be different.

I'm so pleased to be tetched with you.

Please keep in tetch.

Love the humour undertones in this.

Mysteria,
Lol, thanks and thanks for the heads up on PIPs anniversary, actually this would not have been written if I hadn't seen serenitys' comment about how the general public often views poets.

When I tell people I like poetry, they look at me like I am the one with the problem.
If I mention that I have had a poem published, they ask if I made any money on it.
I tell them I don't write for money, and I dont work for Halmark.

I must be tetched.

Fun write,  well done.

The shaved head and beard tend to throw people off, amongst other things.

Well, at least all of us "tetched" people have found each other and can enjoy our affliction togather.

TRACE2RYM,
Thanks, I thought this might connect with a few people, and judging from the replies it appears I may have been right.
Doc

Ida,
How true, lol @ "affliction"
Doc

Lindylou,
Thanks for saying so, I take pride in my "tetchedness".
Doc

Dear Marge,
How wonderful, I had no idea just how mainstream our craft had become in certain circles. I'm sure, should you accept that invitation, you will do us all proud.

Just call me a fan of "tetched" then! *S* (I just duck my head and mutter so folks just hear the word "write"... and wonder when they'll get a letter. *G*)

Wonderful write!

Yepper so true, so true. Say you write poetry and folks look at you like you are something from outer space. But! Of course it might be the Mickey Mouse ears I wear.
Cute one

Dr.Moose1 - being a poet is well, somewhat different I believe. But, it do keep them guessing...

suthern,
Lol. Yep , a little camouflage goes a long way.
Doc

Bonnie,
Lol, well it's not like the moose antlers don't stick out a little either, but people shouldn't be so quick to judge.
Doc

Bill Charles,
Yes indeed, it is somewhat different when you consider yourself to be a poet, you are pretty much putting yourself out there for others to view. Perhaps some can relate, perhaps not. ( Oh God! I feel so naked!)
Lol.
