Alone atop the crashing cliffs
Before the coming storm
An old man tends the world's end light,
His face haggard and worn.

The ships that brave the endless falls
Are warded from afar,
Warned away from maelstroms
As the clouds shroud the stars.

So many souls return to port
By one man's sacrifice,
A man who once had lived and loved
But memories suffice.

Beneath the sunlight's dying haze
He tolls the ancient bell,
Casts his mind back to a time with
The woman he once held.

The tempests took her from the cliffs
As she gazed out to sea,
And so beside the deepest grave
He will forever be.

Out of reach, out of sight
I feel strange and lost
Can you lead me right?
It's too dark for me to see,
capture of soul won't you please forgive me

Luke, I could read your poetry forever more!
I enjoyed everything about this post ~ the painting, the sadly romantic story, and the rhythm and rhyme of your writing.

Love 'n a hug,
Linda
